Upcoming Study Abroad events

Several events are scheduled to provide more information about upcoming study abroad programs.  Mark your calendar for the ones that interest you:

Info Session on Sustainable Bicycle Transportation Planning Field School: Tuesday, January 31st, 12:00 to 1:30 pm, EMU Rogue Room. Marc Schlossberg, the program's faculty director, will present on this year's expanded program, which will include one week each in Copenhagen, Utrecht, and Amsterdam.
Info Session on Summer in Fes, Morocco: Tuesday, January 31st, 1:00 to 2:30 pm, EMU Mills International Center.  Géraldine Poizat-Newcomb, the UO faculty member who taught in Fes in 2010 and who is slated to return in 2011, will be there to share her photos and experience. Courses include intensive modern standard Arabic (six levels from beginner up) and Professor Poizat-Newcomb's course, "From the Amazigh to Tahar Ben Jelloun: An Introduction to Moroccan Identities."
Info Session on study abroad opportunities in anthropology: Tuesday, January 31st, 4:00 to 5:00 pm, 368 Condon Hall.  Includes overview of offerings in anthropology: the Primate Conservation Field School in Tanzania and the Archaeology Field Schools.


Buildings in CubaCuba returns!

Thanks to a change in federal government policies here at home, study abroad opportunities in Cuba are reopening!  The SIT Cuba program will launch again in fall 2012.  The program focuses on the history, culture, and identities of Cuba.  The application is now open, so please feel free to apply!  Brochure and application

Summer 2012: Jungles, primates, stone-carving, bicycles and more!

We have recently updated the brochures and applications for several upcoming summer 2012 programs, including:

Neotropical Ecology program: A combination of on-campus courses with a field course in Ecuador (cloud forests, jungles, and more), this program is open to students  in biology, environmental studies, and general science and provides a powerful immersion experience in the diverse ecosystems of Ecuador.  Deadline 2/1
Tanzania Primate Conservation field school: NEW!! An intensive program on conservation challenges in Africa, with a focus on primate species on both the mainland and the island of Zanzibar.  Deadline 3/1
Harbin Intensive Chinese program: NEW!! Immersion program for students seeking rapid advancement in their study of Chinese language and culture, designed for students who have begun study of Chinese (including Chinese Flagship students from the UO and other universities). Complete one full year of Chinese plus a culture course and engage in cultural and service activities as well.  Deadline 2/1
Croatia Preservation field school: A hands-on program about historic preservation of vernacular stone architecture in the Mediterranean, sustainability of village life, and the interface of structural and landscape design. Includes site studies on multiple islands and an intensive stone-carving school. Only program of its kind operated by a US university!  Deadline 3/1
Sustainable Bicycle Transportation Planning field school: A field school that explores three urban laboratories in Europe (Copenhagen, Utrecht, and Amsterdam) and considers how European cities and countries have planned for bicycle-friendly and sustainable transportation.  Deadline 3/1

Are you a recently returned alumnus or alumna of a UO study abroad or IE3 Global Internships program?  If so, we encourage you to consider attending this year's (annual) Northwest Returnee Conference, scheduled for Saturday, February 11th at the UO White Stag Building in Portland.  You can read all about the conference and register at the Northwest Returnee Conference website.


Drop-in advising

Drop-in advising is provided every weekday during the fall, winter and spring terms (not exam weeks or holidays) and is a great way to start learning about whether and how studying or interning abroad might work for you.  Drop-in advisees are seen on a first-come, first-served basis.  Sign in at reception in 333 Oregon Hall.

• Study abroad drop-in advising: Weekdays, 11 am to 2 pm
• IE3 Global Internships drop-in advising: Weekdays, 1 to 2 pm
