Academic Program

The Ghana Program is a fall or spring 15-week semester program that focuses on development issues in Africa, combining relevant coursework with hands-on community service learning opportunities for students in local NGOs. Program participants enroll in three courses in addition to a supervised community service learning project. Topics explored in program coursework include the role of women in development, urbanization, crime and corruption, culture and development; as well as contemporary cultural and social issues in Ghana today.

In addition, students take a course in modern Twi, one of Ghana’s commonly spoken indigenous languages. Through their service learning placements, students will have opportunities to experience for themselves the complexities of ethnic, economic and gender identities within Ghanaian communities.

The following courses are offered each semester:

Modern Twi
Ghana Today
Development Issues in Ghana
Service Learning Project

A listing of course descriptions and syllabi can be found at:

AHA Ghana Course Descriptions .

As part of the program, excursions and field trips are organized to historic and cultural sites in and around Accra/Legon.
