Academic Program

The Tunisia program offers coursework in five specific areas: language studies in either French or Arabic; Mediterranean and Tunisian civilization; gender studies; environmental studies; and cross-cultural communications. Program participants enroll for a minimum of 13 credits of language coursework in French or Arabic. Students are also encouraged to take at least one of the elective courses, taught in English that are specifically designed for the program.

A listing of courses can be found at:   OSU Tunisia Program

Language courses are taught by instructors from the Institut Supérieur des Langues à Tunis (ISLT). The Resident Directors from Oregon State University who supervise the program are responsible for teaching the elective courses.

As part of the program, field trips are incorporated into the academic program. Past excursions have included visits to Carthage, Utique, Sidi Bou SaVd, Musée du Bardo, the Medina of Tunis, the Island of Djerba (of Homerian fame), Berber troglodyte habitations and a Saharan Oasis.

Resident Directors
Laura Rice, and Karim Hamdy serve as Resident Directors for the Tunisia program and teach the elective courses. Laura Rice is an Associate Professor of English at Oregon State University (OSU). Karim Hamdy, originally from Tunisia, is an OSU instructor of Arabic.

Registration and Credits

Students participating in this program will be registered at the University of Oregon and will receive UO credits for courses taken in Tunis. The student’s course work will be reviewed and evaluated by appropriate academic departments at the UO. Students must keep detailed records of course outlines, reading lists, exam results, and other work completed to facilitate accurate evaluation by the academic departments at the UO.

Students are responsible for making sure that the courses they plan to take in Tunis will meet major and minor requirements. Students are advised to consult with their academic advisor about their plans to study in the Tunisia program.

Course Equivalencies

Only those courses that have been taken by UO students in the last seven years are listed on the equivalency sheet. Courses that do not appear on this sheet will need to be approved for UO credit.

The Tunisia program is a new offering for UO students. All courses must be approved.
