Lauren Banasky
London, England (Spring 1999)

After my experience in London, I not only fell in love with England but also with its rich history. In October 2001, I left Portland to work in Europe for a year. I spent time as a waitress in a Scottish hotel/restaurant, an Irish sport horse trainer in Galway and a bi-lingual receptionist at a French chateau. Each of the jobs were quite physically and mentally challenging, but wonderfully gratifying. I returned to Portland and found a job in a clinic for children with learning disabilities. For the past three years, I have worked in this clinic, pursued my master's degree in English history and fought an aggressive brain tumor. I am now tumor-free and looking forward to being a full-time graduate student next year. My end goal is to become a professor of early modern English history. My study abroad experience shaped my plans for the future.

I work in the outdoor industry for a company called Ruff Wear in Bend. We make outdoor equipment for dogs, and I get to continue to use my German skills with our European distributors. I will be going back to Switzerland and Austria for my honeymoon in January 2007, where I will be introducing my fiancee to the culture and fantastic skiing experiences. I continue to ski and figure skate, and I have a Great Dane as my fur-child.

Alexis (Benjamin) Mason
Quito, Ecuador

I married my college sweetheart, Scott, on September 4, 2005, in Moorpark, California. In 2004, Scott's job was transferred to Stamford, Connecticut, so we made the big move out east from Portland. We live about 45 minutes from New York City, which we love! I am still very much connected to my study abroad experience through my career. I work for the head office of a large cultural exchange program called American Institute for Foreign Studies, Inc. (AIFS). My division, called Academic Year in America, offers high school students from around the world the opportunity to live with an American host family and attend public high school for a year. We have local coordinators across the U.S. who identify and screen host families, and supervise the students once they're here. I am currently in transition to a new position, where I will be hiring and training all new local coordinators, as well as administering certain grants and scholarships to high schools and host families. This is a very unique job that has allowed me to stay connected to my own study abroad experience in Ecuador.
