Academic Program
The CIEE Study Center in Argentina, established in 1993, includes specialized courses at FLACSO in a variety of disciplines taught by experts in various academic fields, and taught exclusively to CIEE students. In addition, students are required to enroll in direct enrollment courses within academic departments and faculties at one of the three host institutions, UBA, UCA, or IUNA. The CIEE program is suitable for undergraduate students with very strong language skills. All courses are taught in Spanish.
Students take four to six classes per semester, including one or two FLACSO courses, a Spanish language course if required, and three to four direct enrollment university courses within specific academic departments and faculties at UBA, UCA, or IUNA. Students who place in Spanish levels 0-6 on their language placement exam administered upon arrival are required to take a Spanish language course at their level. Students may take a second Spanish language course in place of a direct enrollment course.
During the second semester, academic and calendar year students can take two other courses at FLACSO or take all of their courses at the host universities. Academic and calendar year participants are encouraged, but not required, to enroll in a Spanish language course during their second semester.
A listing of courses can be found at:
CIEE - Argentina Program
Students take part in the CIEE Community Language Commitment by speaking Spanish at all times (except in emergencies). This fosters a learning community that contributes to both Spanish language proficiency and understanding of Argentine society.
Tutorials are offered each semester. With CIEE support and supervision, students meet with individual tutors, either classmates or graduate students, who help them get the most out of each class.
CIEE students can volunteer with organizations involved in social policy, human rights, community service, and health issues. Students interested in this option enroll in the Seminar on Community Service and Volunteer Work course, which includes 15 hours of theoretical coursework and 45 hours of volunteer service.
As part of the program, cultural activities and field trips are organized in and around Buenos Aries.
Special interest groups provide students with an opportunity to participate in cultural activities organized around a particular issues. Examples include soccer, theater, movies, and cooking. Students also have the opportunity to learn how to dance tango.
Resident Director

She has a Masters degree in Sociology from the Universidad de Buenos Aires and a Masters degree from FLACSO in Social Sciences and Public Health. Andrea's academic interests include public health, gender and women, adolescents, and children and family. She has done consulting work and bi-national research between Argentina and Uruguay focusing on community empowerment and social participation in dengue prevention and mosquito eradication in the region.
