Academic Program
SIT semester programs include the following components: one-week orientation, intensive language study, homestay (in urban and rural areas), thematic seminar, field methods seminar, independent study project (last month of program), and program evaluation.
Regional Integration, Development, and Social Change
Examine the challenges of regional economic integration in the context of global competition with a focus on MERCOSUR (Mercado Común del Sur/Southern Common Market), which includes Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Each faces social, political, and economic challenges as it deals with internal, regional, and global shifts.
Based in cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, students travel to three of the four member nations of MERCOSUR. Each country serves as a distinct «lens» through which to examine its role and approach toward the development and integration of the Southern Cone.
Lectures in each country’s history and economic structure set the stage for field visits exploring relevant issues such as Guaraní culture, grassroots movements, alternative development, and participatory democracy. Students also gain insight into the different countries’ view of MERCOSUR, its benefits and its problems.
All students take the following courses:
- Regional Integration, Development, and Social Change Seminar.
- Intensive Language Study: Spanish.
- Field Study Seminar.
- Independent Study Project.
A listing of courses and syllabi can be found at: Coursework: Regional Integration, Development, and Social Change.
