Academic Calendar

Approximate dates for 2008 are as follows (dates for 2009 will be similar):

Summer:   June 13 to August 13, 2008
Fall Semester:   August 20 to November 30, 2008
Spring Semester:   February 10 to May 22, 2008

Accommodations

Housing and all meals are included in the program fee. For two months out of four, students live in a biological station where all classes are taught, which is beautifully situated adjacent to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Students stay in four-person rooms (two bunk beds) with private baths and hot showers. Meals are taken at the biological station and served family style. Vegetarians/vegans can easily be accommodated.

A one-month homestay is included in the program, during which participants live and take their meals with local Costa Rican families throughout the Monteverde-Santa Elena regions. Homestays are assigned based on Independent Study research interests. All meals are included for the length of the homestay period.

Additionally, students spend several extended periods camping as they travel on excursions through various ecosystems.

Insurance

All CIEE program participants are covered by an Accident and Sickness Insurance policy designed to help cover the cost of accidents and/or routine sickness while abroad. Additionally, the policy offers Emergency Evacuation coverage, together with a 24-hour Worldwide Assistance Service. A complete description of the Sickness Insurance policy is included with participant acceptance materials.

UO Financial Aid

Although most forms of UO financial aid may be applied to program costs, students should be aware that they may need to supplement their standard financial aid package. All students using UO financial aid should download the attached instructions.

Using Your Financial Aid Abroad

Summer
During the summer, loans are generally the only type of aid available to students studying overseas and students should be aware that they may need to supplement their standard financial aid package. Summer financial aid applications are available beginning April 1 and must be submitted to the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships by May 1. Early application is strongly advised.

Scholarship Opportunities

CIEE scholarships are available only to CIEE program participants. These grants ranging from $500 to $1,000 (Bowman, Bailey, Ritzmann, ISP) and are awarded each year to students who demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need. The awards are applied directly to the applicant's CIEE program fee. For more information and application materials, visit www.ciee.org/study/scholarships.aspx or contact Study Abroad Programs.
