Academic Program
Students may study in Quito at either the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE) or Universidad San Francisco de Quito. Students may study Spanish language and culture and/or take regular university coursework in a number of subjects. Students are encouraged to participate for an academic year, but semester options are available.
Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE). Long known for its role in higher education in Ecuador, the PUCE is a traditional university that offers an excellent Spanish language program for foreigners, a selection of courses that help illustrate the people and cultures of Ecuador, and opportunities for integration into regular classes with Ecuadorian students for students with higher levels of Spanish language proficiency. Located in the middle of Quito, the PUCE is near the cultural, political and economic centers of the city.
The Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) provides excellent support for students who wish to focus on Spanish language and culture, as well as regular university coursework with Ecuadorian students in the social sciences, sciences and humanities. A dynamic institution, the USFQ has garnered a reputation for academic quality, innovation, and a diverse curriculum. Students in a wide variety of disciplines will likely find coursework to fit their interests and degree plans.
Registration and Credits
Students participating in this program will be registered at the University of Oregon and will receive UO credits for courses taken at PUCE and USFQ. The student’s course work will be reviewed and evaluated by appropriate academic departments at the UO. Students must keep detailed records of course outlines, reading lists, exam results, and other work completed to facilitate accurate evaluation by the academic departments at the UO.
Students are responsible for making sure that the courses they plan to take in Ecuador will meet major and minor requirements. Students are advised to consult with their academic advisor about their plans to study in the Quito program.
Course Equivalencies
Only those courses that have been taken by UO students in the last seven years are listed on the equivalency sheet. Courses that do not appear on this sheet will need to be approved for UO credit.
