Deadlines

The application deadlines are:

January 10 for the Spring Term
March 15 for Summer
April 15 for the Fall Term
October 15 for the winter term

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Early application is highly recommended, as program space is limited.

Eligibility Requirements

The program is open to students from all fields of study. To be eligible, students must meet the following minimum requirements before departure:

  • have an overall GPA of 2.5 or above.
  • have at least 45 credits (freshman year complete).

The summer educators program is open to graduate, postgraduate, and highly motivated undergraduate students with upper-division education course work.

Students must also make satisfactory academic progress throughout the application process and their study abroad program, and otherwise comply with policies and procedures of the host university, the UO and Study Abroad Programs.

If you do not meet the minimum requirements, please contact Jamie Hoag Barnett before applying.

(Note: Except for the Summer Educators Program, this program is not open to graduate students.)

Application Process

Early application is advised. Selection for the program is based on a review of the student's written application, transcripts, recommendations and a personal interview.

IMPORTANT: Applications for AHA programs involve two parts, which must be submitted to two different locations. Applications are available in Study Abroad Programs, Room 330 Oregon Hall or online at:

NOTE:  Both parts of the application are due by the application deadline.

AHA requires, at the time of application, both a non-refundable application fee of $50 and a refundable deposit of $200 for each term/session you want to study at an AHA site (each summer session requires a separate deposit). The application fee is not refundable under any circumstances. The deposit is refundable or transferable, subject to certain guidelines and limitations. Please consult the AHA refund policy at http://ahastudyabroad.org/.

Selection and Participation

Participants must meet the eligibility requirements for their chosen program, and be prepared linguistically, academically, and socially to succeed abroad. Study abroad participants must satisfactorily complete the following:

  • well-written program application.
  • personal interview.
  • timely submission of required paperwork.
  • attendance at pre-departure orientation sessions.
  • payment of program fees.

Program participants must also demonstrate the ability to be successful overseas through evidence of maturity, motivation, and flexibility, and such other characteristics as Study Abroad Programs may deem relevant or appropriate. Participation in any program is subject to the approval of International Affairs and its partner institutions, which may grant or withhold such approval in their sole discretion.

Secondary Paperwork

All students admitted to this program are required to complete and submit to Study Abroad Programs secondary paperwork. The paperwork will be given to students at the end of their interview or can be downloaded at:

Secondary Paperwork

Visa Information

Students will need to obtain a "Tourist" visa upon arrival in Mexico. Once in Mexico, the UNLA staff will assist students to acquire a student visa. It is the student's responsibility to secure the visas. AHA International will provide instructions to assist students with the visa application process. The granting of visas is at the sole discretion of the Mexican government and cannot be guaranteed by AHA International or the University of Oregon.

Students who are not U.S., Canadian, Japanese, or EU citizens should notify AHA International immediately of their citizenship status, as they may need to apply for and obtain a visa before departing for Mexico.

Please note that visa regulations and policies change frequently.

All students should apply for or renew (if necessary) their U.S. (or other) passports as soon as possible.

Orientations

All study abroad participants must fulfill the required study abroad orientation process. Students are required to complete a general Blackboard orientation and attend the program-specific orientation.

The orientations will cover administrative logistics, travel, health, safety, conduct, housing and cultural adjustment and whenever possible involve discussions with past participants. More information regarding the orientation process will be emailed to students.
