A $50 application fee is due at the time the application is submitted and is non-refundable under any circumstances.

Selection and Participation

Participants must meet the eligibility requirements for their chosen program, and be prepared linguistically, academically, and socially to succeed abroad. Study abroad participants must satisfactorily complete the following:

  • well-written program application.
  • personal interview.
  • timely submission of required paperwork.
  • attendance at pre-departure orientation sessions.
  • payment of program fees.

Program participants must also demonstrate the ability to be successful overseas through evidence of maturity, motivation, and flexibility, and such other characteristics as Study Abroad Programs may deem relevant or appropriate. Participation in any program is subject to the approval of International Affairs and its partner institutions, which may grant or withhold such approval in their sole discretion.

Visa Information

U.S. citizens do not need visas to enter Germany; a U.S. passport is all that is necessary. Students will need to obtain a residence permit (an "Aufenthaltserlaubnis") in order to live in Germany for a year. The Resident Director or the Auslandsamt at the university will instruct students on how to apply for it once they've arrived. Holders of non-U.S. passports must check with the German consulate before leaving the U.S. to determine if other rules apply to them. Also, students living in the U.S. on student visas must check with a UO international student advisor to determine if an extended stay outside the U.S. will jeopardize their visa standing.

Orientations

All students are required to participate in an OUS pre-departure orientation. Orientation dates will be provided during the personal interview.

In addition, all UO study abroad participants are required to complete a general Blackboard orientation. More information regarding the orientation process will be emailed to students.

The orientations will cover administrative logistics, travel, health, safety, conduct, housing and cultural adjustment.
