Academic Program
UO Professor Term: Professor Massimo Lollini will lead a group of UO undergraduates, with at least 2 years of Italian language, to Ferrara in the Fall of 2008. He will teach a 300/400 level course in Italian based on the history and culture of Ferrara, from Renaissance epic (Boiardo, Ariosto and Tasso) to Giorgio Bassani's Romanzo di Ferrara. We also anticipate that a UO professor will participate every other fall semester (2010, 2012, etc.). UO students may still opt to study in Ferrara in other semesters as well.
The CIEE Study Center in Ferrara opened in 2003. The Liberal Arts program began in spring 2006. This program is designed for students with intermediate to advanced Italian language skills with a strong interest in immersing themselves in the language and culture of Italy through intensive Italian language study and content courses taught in Italian.
All CIEE students enroll in a required, intensive 3-week Italian language course at the start of the semester. Following the intensive language course, all students are required to continue their Italian language study at the appropriate level throughout the semester and take the CIEE core class. Students are also required to select two content courses taught in Italian with Italian texts, although a bibliography of support material in English is also available. Students may be able to audit selected courses at the University of Ferrara.
A listing of courses can be found at:
CIEE - Ferrara Liberal Arts Program.
All CIEE classes are with CIEE students only and not with Italian students. Faculty teaching CIEE courses are from local Italian universities.
Students take part in the CIEE Community Language Commitment by speaking Italian at all times (except in emergencies). This fosters a learning community that contributes to both Italian language proficiency and understanding of Italian society.
The academic program is supplemented with excursions to local places of interest and cultural activities.
Resident Director
Richard Chapman was born in Wales and has been a resident of Ferrara since 1994. He received his undergraduate degree in history from the University of Cambridge and his masters in English Language Teaching and professional Development from the University of East Anglia, UK. He has taught English as a foreign language since 1987 in both Italy and England. Since 1999, he has taught English in the Department of Languages at the University of Ferrara.
Registration and Credits
Students participating in this program will be registered at the University of Oregon and will receive UO credits for courses taken in Ferrara. Students' course work will be reviewed and evaluated by appropriate academic departments at the UO. Students must keep detailed records of course outlines, reading lists, exam results, and other work completed to facilitate accurate evaluation by the academic departments at the UO.
Students are responsible for making sure that the courses they plan to take in Ferrara will meet major and minor requirements. Students are advised to consult with their academic advisor about their plans to study in the Italy program.
Course Equivalencies
Only those courses that have been taken by UO students in the last seven years are listed on the equivalency sheet. Courses that do not appear on this sheet will need to be approved for UO credit.
