Deadlines
The application deadlines are:
February 1 for fall semester or the academic year.

(Note: This program is not open to graduate students.)
Application Process
Students interested in applying to a CIEE program are strongly advised to meet with a program coordinator prior to applying.
Early application is advised. Selection for the program is based on a review of the student's written application, transcripts, recommendations and a personal interview. Qualified applicants are recommended by a Study Abroad Program Coordinator in International Affairs. The final selection of participants is made by CIEE.
To apply for a CIEE program, please visit the CIEE website and follow the How to Apply steps. Please note, however, that the UO has earlier deadlines and that all application materials (see below) must be submitted to Study Abroad Programs, room 330 Oregon Hall.
CIEE application
Please submit the following to Study Abroad Programs (room 330 Oregon Hall):
Make sure to read the CIEE application instructions carefully.
- CIEE Application Forms (if you submit your application online, please submit a printout of the application).
- Personal Statement.
- $50 check or money order made payable to the University of Oregon.
- UO Disciplinary Clearance Form.
- Two Evaluation Forms (one required for summer programs).
- Six passport-size color photos. Print your name on the back of each photo.
- Official transcript(s).
A $50 application fee is due at the time the application is submitted and is non-refundable under any circumstances.
Selection and Participation
Participants must meet the eligibility requirements for their chosen program, and be prepared linguistically, academically, and socially to succeed abroad. Study abroad participants must satisfactorily complete the following:
- well-written program application.
- personal interview.
- timely submission of required paperwork.
- attendance at pre-departure orientation sessions.
- payment of program fees.
Program participants must also demonstrate the ability to be successful overseas through evidence of maturity, motivation, and flexibility, and such other characteristics as Study Abroad Programs may deem relevant or appropriate. Participation in any program is subject to the approval of International Affairs and its partner institutions, which may grant or withhold such approval in their sole discretion.
Secondary Paperwork
All students admitted to this program are required to complete and submit to Study Abroad Programs secondary paperwork. The paperwork will be given to students at the end of their interview or can be downloaded at:

Visa Information
Student Visa: Students who are admitted into this program must obtain an Italian student visa. All visa applications for the Ferrara program will be processed by Roger Adkins in International Affairs. All program participants will be required to attend a Visa Process Orientation meeting announced after the application deadline.
EU Citizens: Citizens/passport holders of EU countries (and Switzerland) are not required to obtain a student visa to study in another EU country. These students will complete a registration process once onsite with the help of CIEE resident staff.
Tourist Visa: Students should note that they will likely also be using days that count against their Schengen Area tourist visa. The Schengen tourist visa is stamped in the passport upon arrival in Europe and allows U.S. citizens 90 total days as tourists in the following fifteen countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. Students in Italy programs will have this 90-day tourist period over and above the days allotted in the Italian student visa.
Please note that visa regulations and policies change frequently.
All students should apply for or renew (if necessary) their U.S. (or other) passports as soon as possible.
Orientations
All study abroad participants must fulfill the required study abroad orientation process. Students are required to complete a general Blackboard orientation and attend the program-specific orientation.
The orientations will cover administrative logistics, travel, health, safety, conduct, housing and cultural adjustment and whenever possible involve discussions with past participants. More information regarding the orientation process will be emailed to students.
A mandatory three-day orientation session, conducted in Ferrara at the beginning of the program, introduces students to Italian customs and culture, and the academic program, and provides practical information about living in Ferrara. During this time, students begin their intensive Italian language instruction.
