AHA - Macerata, Italy

Location

Located in the Marche region of Italy, Macerata is a medium-sized Italian city of approximately 40,000 residents and is surrounded by beautiful, hilly countryside. Many of the towns in the Marche region—Macerata included—are historic, medieval walled cities. Being in a less “touristy” area, Macerata program participants have the opportunity to experience Italian life and culture and practice their Italian language skills; there are few English speakers in Macerata. Macerata is only half an hour from the gorgeous Adriatic Sea coast, is very close to the striking Sibilline Mountains, and also boasts natural thermal baths, found just outside of the city. In addition, it is within four hours from Florence and Rome by efficient, daily trains and buses.

Macerata sits atop a hill and has many beautiful palazzos (palaces). The architecture in the city dates from the Etruscan, Roman, medieval, and Baroque periods, among others. Students will find interesting cultural activities and historic sites, both in Macerata and the Marche region. Some sites that might be of interest include: several of the towns and churches mentioned in Dante’s Inferno, the Museo delle Carrozze (museum of carriages), a museum of Italian Futurism, the ruins of Roman settlements (destroyed by the Visigoths), frescoes, Romanesque churches, and more.

Macerata enjoys very hospitable weather, with hot afternoons in the fall and spring giving way to breezy, warm evenings (perfect for late-night dinners at outdoor tables in the piazza), and mild winters promising only very little rain or snow.

The Program Site

The AHA site in Macerata is located in a beautiful 17th century palazzo with ceiling frescoes and within walking distance from the University of Macerata (the local Italian institution). Students are encouraged to explore the University campus, eating lunch at the mensa (cafeteria) with Italian students, or using the University’s computer facilities or gym. The AHA site is located in the historic walled city. Although most students live outside of the walled historic center, they are still within walking distance of the Center and most everything in Macerata. The Center has wireless Internet access, which is useful for students who bring their laptops.
