The spring architecture program in Macerata offers students a unique opportunity to study architecture in a classic Italian hill town. Students experience first-hand Italian culture and gain a perspective on Italy’s contribution to architectural, urban and landscape design through the ages. Architectural design studio and courses are complemented by excursions in Macerata and others to significant regional sites and to Florence, Rome and Venice. Excursions allow students to expand their knowledge of Italy outside the classroom and provide a vehicle for hands-on study that support the design studio and the other courses.

Highlights:

  • The program offers an architectural design studio and is open to architecture, interior architecture and landscape architecture graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Because Macerata is relatively undiscovered by tourists, students are immersed in Italian ways of living.
  • Studio and classes are held in the AHA International-University of Oregon center on the third floor of the Palazzo Floriani, an elegant 18th-century palace in the town’s historic center.
  • Students live in fully furnished apartments that are in close walking distance to each other and the program center.
  • UO Architecture professors co-direct the program with an Italian site director, who is also an architect and architectural historian.
