Architecture - Macerata, Italy
Location
Nestled on a hilltop between the Chienti and Potenza rivers, the medieval walled city of Macerata sits on the eastern edge of Italy, 25 minutes from the Adriatic Sea. Originally a Roman settlement, Macerata and the many surrounding small towns and villages offer students ample opportunities for exploring a rich heritage of historic layers of architecture. A provincial capital with a population of 50,000, Macerata is a university town. Oregon students will have use of the facilities of the Universita degli Studi di Macerata and will have the opportunity to meet Italian and international students. Because Macerata is relatively undiscovered by tourists, the studio facilities and housing for students are in close proximity to each other in the town’s historic center. Macerata’s quiet character is supportive of serious studio work, while providing the opportunity to truly live in an Italian hill town. At the same time, students can travel independently, as Macerata is 4 hours from Florence by bus, 3.5 hours from Rome and has connections to other destinations such as Ravenna, Venezia, Assisi, Spoleto, Siena, Ancona, San Marino, Rimini and Naples.
Studio Facilities
The Macerata Program is housed in the AHA International-University of Oregon center on the third floor of the Palazzo Floriani, an elegant 18th-century palace in the heart of town. Studio space, seminar rooms, a computer lab, library and student lounge are available to program participants. Students have access to the city’s libraries and to the libraries, computer labs, sports facilities, student cafeterias and lounges of the Universita degli Studi di Macerata.
