Academic Program

The Rome Architecture program is an intensive study program offered during the summer term. This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students in architecture, interior architecture, and landscape architecture who are eligible for their 4/584 studio sequences.

A faculty member from the University of Oregon’s Department of Architecture is the resident director and instructor for the courses.

Courses and Credits
All students are required to follow the academic program consisting of three courses:

Architectural Design Studio (6 credits)
The studio project and emphasis will be decided by the UO director for the session. The studio in Rome asks students to explore design responses to a specific place through the issues of particularity, enclosure, appropriateness, continuity and change, materials, climate and structure. Evaluations will be in the form of desk crits, studio pin ups, a mid-term and final reviews.

Seminar (3 credits)
The seminar class will emphasize the history of Rome and its impact on spatial ordering and form within the city. Students will be asked to explore the city and to record, analyze and experience meaningful places in order to understand how they were created and how they are utilized today.

Media (3 credits) The media class requires students to develop field documentation skills and design analysis techniques while exploring a variety of graphic media.

Academic standards in Rome are consistent with standards at the University of Oregon.  Students are evaluated in the same way as they are for on-campus courses and are expected to perform accordingly. Summer programs are more compact than the fall-spring terms.  It is therefore important that students plan for at least 20 out-of-class hours per week to complete assigned work.
