Eligibility Requirements

The program is open to undergraduate students in good standing. To be eligible, students must meet the following minimum requirements before departure:

  • a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above.
  • have at least 45 credits (freshman year complete).

Students must also make satisfactory academic progress throughout the application process and their study abroad program, and otherwise comply with policies and procedures of the host university, the UO and Study Abroad Programs.

If you do not meet the minimum requirements, please contact Roger Adkins before applying.

(Note: This program is not open to graduate students.)

Application Process

Students interested in applying to an SIT program are strongly advised to meet with a program coordinator prior to applying.

SIT Study Abroad has rolling admission, which means that applications are reviewed on a rolling basis between the opening and closing dates of the review process. Applications must be complete to be reviewed for admission. Since many programs fill long before the published closing dates, students are strongly advised to apply by the above priority deadline.

Qualified applicants are recommended by a Study Abroad Program Coordinator in International Affairs. The final selection of participants is made by SIT. The SIT admissions committee strives to select students who will be the best possible match for the program. Applicants should submit strong academic references and demonstrate a consistent academic record, clear motivation to study abroad, solid reasoning for their program choice, and an understanding of the program model.

To apply for a SIT Study Abroad program, please visit the SIT website and follow the How to Apply steps. Please note, however, that the UO has earlier deadlines and that all application materials (see below) must be submitted to Study Abroad Programs, room 330 Oregon Hall.

SIT Application Instructions

Please submit the following to Study Abroad Programs (room 330 Oregon Hall):
Make sure to read the SIT application instructions carefully.

  • SIT Application Forms (if you submit your application online, please submit a printout of the application).
  • Two Essays (one essay for summer programs).
  • $50 Application Fee (made payable to SIT).
  • UO Disciplinary Clearance Form.
  • Two Academic Reference Forms.
  • Official transcript(s).

A $50 application fee is due at the time the application is submitted and is non-refundable under any circumstances.

Selection and Participation

Participants must meet the eligibility requirements for their chosen program, and be prepared linguistically, academically, and socially to succeed abroad. Study abroad participants must satisfactorily complete the following:

  • well-written program application.
  • personal interview.
  • timely submission of required paperwork.
  • attendance at pre-departure orientation sessions.
  • payment of program fees.

Program participants must also demonstrate the ability to be successful overseas through evidence of maturity, motivation, and flexibility, and such other characteristics as Study Abroad Programs may deem relevant or appropriate. Participation in any program is subject to the approval of International Affairs and its partner institutions, which may grant or withhold such approval in their sole discretion.

Secondary Paperwork

All students admitted to this program are required to complete and submit to Study Abroad Programs secondary paperwork. The paperwork will be given to students at the end of their interview or can be downloaded at:

Secondary Paperwork

Visa Information

Depending on the program, participants may need to obtain a visa from the host country. SIT Study Abroad will provide participants the information needed to obtain visas and assist in the process when necessary.

The student is responsible for complying with all visa procedures and deadlines as outlined by SIT Study Abroad. Issuance of visas is the sole discretion of the applicable consulate or embassy. SIT and the UO cannot guarantee visas for participants, and it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to secure the appropriate visa(s) in a timely manner.

Non-U.S. citizens should consult with SIT Study Abroad early to determine any different requirements.

Please note that visa regulations and policies change frequently.

All students should apply for or renew (if necessary) their U.S. (or other) passports as soon as possible.

Orientations

All study abroad participants must fulfill the required study abroad orientation process. Students are required to complete a general Blackboard orientation.

The orientation will cover administrative logistics, travel, health, safety, conduct, housing and cultural adjustment. More information regarding the orientation process will be emailed to students.

During the first week of the program, the academic director and other professionals conduct academic, cross-cultural, and program orientations, and review health, safety, and security risks and strategies.
