Deadlines
The application deadlines are:
December 1 for summer.
February 1 for the fall semester or the academic year.
June 1 for the spring semester.
Please apply for the deadline for the first term you would like to study in Oslo.
Eligibility Requirements
This program is open to admitted and enrolled University of Oregon students in all fields of study. To be eligible, students must before departure:
- have at least 90 credits.
- have an overall GPA of 2.75 or above (3.25 for graduate students).
- Norwegian language recommendation: Because the UiO teaches a number of subjects in English, there is no language requirement for this program. Nevertheless, students are strongly encouraged to complete one year of Norwegian at the UO before joining this program. Students who want to study subjects taught in Norwegian normally complete a minimum of two years of Norwegian language (with average grades of B or better) before going to Oslo.
Students must also make satisfactory academic progress throughout the application process and their study abroad program, and otherwise comply with policies and procedures of the host university, the UO and Study Abroad Programs.
If you do not meet the minimum requirements, please contact Roger Adkins before applying.
Application Process
Early application is advised. Selection for the program is based on a review of the student's written application, transcripts, recommendations, personal interview, and (for students with advanced Norwegian) language proficiency evaluation by the UO instructor of Norwegian. Applications are submitted to Study Abroad Programs.
Applications are available in Study Abroad Programs, Room 330 Oregon Hall or online via the link below:
UO application
A $50 application fee is due at the time the application is submitted and is non-refundable under any circumstances.
Graduate Students
In addition to the process described above and below, graduate student applicants must also complete the Graduate Enrollment in UO-Sponsored Study Abroad Programs form. This form requires that you obtain pre-authorization for your program from your advisor, department head and the Graduate School.

Selection and Participation
Participants must meet the eligibility requirements for their chosen program, and be prepared linguistically, academically, and socially to succeed abroad. Study abroad participants must satisfactorily complete the following:
- well-written program application.
- personal interview.
- timely submission of required paperwork.
- attendance at pre-departure orientation sessions.
- payment of program fees.
Program participants must also demonstrate the ability to be successful overseas through evidence of maturity, motivation, and flexibility, and such other characteristics as Study Abroad Programs may deem relevant or appropriate. Participation in any program is subject to the approval of International Affairs and its partner institutions, which may grant or withhold such approval in their sole discretion.
Secondary Paperwork
All students admitted to this program are required to complete and submit to Study Abroad Programs secondary paperwork. The paperwork will be given to students at the end of their interview or can be downloaded at:
Secondary Paperwork
Visa Information
After receiving a letter of acceptance from the University of Oslo, students must apply for a residence permit from the Norwegian Consulate. Due to a long processing period, students who wish to obtain the visa before departing from the United States must apply as soon as they receive the Oslo notice of admission. (Norway also allows U.S. students to apply for the visa within the first week of arrival in the country, but students who opt for this later application may experience delays in registration for other services in Norway that require a residence permit number.) All applicants must attend the Norwegian Visa Information Session in order to initiate this process.
Students participating in only the summer program do not require a student residence permit. Likewise, students participating in only the UNIS program do not need a Norwegian residence permit for Svalbard, but a transit visa may be necessary to land in the Norwegian mainland en route to Svalbard.
Please note that visa regulations and policies change frequently.
All students should apply for or renew (if necessary) their U.S. (or other) passports as soon as possible.
Orientations
All study abroad participants must fulfill the required study abroad orientation process. Students are required to complete a general Blackboard orientation and attend the program-specific orientation.
The orientations will cover administrative logistics, travel, health, safety, conduct, housing and cultural adjustment and whenever possible involve discussions with past participants. More information regarding the orientation process will be emailed to students.
