Academics
Academic Program
Summer Program
The two-month summer program is designed to improve students’ oral, listening, and reading proficiency in Russian language and to introduce students to contemporary Russia. Students also attend lectures and seminars in Russian literature, history, and culture.
Semester Program
The semester programs are four months in length and are designed to improve students’ Russian language skills and familiarize them with Russian history and culture. There are three semester program tracks: intermediate, advanced, and honors. Students on the honors program have the opportunity to attend two courses in their field of interest with Russian students, in addition to attending advanced language classes with fellow U.S. participants. It may be possible for students to study second year Russian in Vladimir. Please contact the program coordinator to discuss this option.
Academic Year Program
The academic year program provides two semesters of small-group language instruction and seminars on literature, culture and history. Students with two years of college Russian take two semesters of language instruction. Students with three years of college Russian may elect to take fewer courses in the second semester and pursue a research project.
The Business Russian Language and Internship Program combines a specially designed curriculum for business Russian with an average 15-hour per week internship with a U.S. or Russian business in Moscow or St Petersburg. Participants attend classes at American Councils partner universities and take part in an internship. The program is three tiered with academic courses and an internship matched to the appropriate language skill level. Some courses available include the language of business communication, preparation of commercial documents, and understanding the Russian business press.
Registration and Credits
Students participating in this program will be registered at the University of Oregon and will receive UO credits for courses taken through ACTR. The student’s course work will be reviewed and evaluated by appropriate academic departments at the UO. Students must keep detailed records of course outlines, reading lists, exam results, and other work completed to facilitate accurate evaluation by the academic departments at the UO.
Students are responsible for making sure that the courses they plan to take will meet major and minor requirements. Receipt of group requirement credit is unlikely and should not be anticipated. Students are advised to consult with their academic advisor about their plans to study in the ACTR program.
Course Equivalencies
Only those courses that have been taken by UO students in the last seven years are listed on the equivalency sheet. Courses that do not appear on this sheet will need to be approved for UO credit.
