Location

Aberdeen stretches between the Rivers Don and Dee and was the main seaport in the north of Scotland as early as the 13th century. Its shipping trade gradually grew, and by the mid-19th century the Aberdeen clipper trade, which brought tea from China, reached its zenith. The trawling industry developed in the 19th century, and Aberdeen became an important fishing port.

Although vast catches of fish are still handled in the harbor, the oil industry tends to dominate activity at the docks. As a result, Aberdeen now boasts the world’s largest deep-sea oil drilling platform located in the North Sea.

Many buildings in the White City were built from local granite mined at Rubislaw, one of the world’s deepest quarries. The austerity of stone buildings contrasts with many beautiful city parks. A thriving cultural life and a variety of entertainment and sporting facilities also make Aberdeen an enjoyable place to live.

The University of Aberdeen came from the fusion of two medieval Universities: King’s College, founded in 1495, and Marischal College, from 1593.
