Academic Program
The University of Aberdeen is divided into six major faculties (colleges), which include Arts and Social Sciences, Divinity, Law, Science, Engineering, and Medicine. UO students will concentrate their course work in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and/or the Faculty of Sciences. UO students have the opportunity to take courses across disciplinary lines.
The British system of higher education stresses in-depth study of a few subjects and provides a level of specialization that is not generally part of the American undergraduate experience. Learning in this system is self-motivated, with instructors serving more as guides then as teachers, in the traditional sense. A typical course load is three 7- or 8-credit courses per semester. Every overseas student is assigned an advisor at Aberdeen.
A list of available course titles can be found in the University of Aberdeen Undergraduate Prospectus
Summer Course in Scottish Archaeology
The University of Aberdeen also offers a five-week summer course, "Stone Circles, Celts, Picts and Vikings: A Journey through Prehistoric Scotland." The course includes lectures and extensive excursions to archaeological sites relevant to the study of Scotland's prehistory from the end of the last ice age to the founding of the modern nation. Participants receive 8 UO credits and enjoy a residential experience with diverse students from many countries.
Interested students must first apply for admission into the program at the UO, by completing the application for the Aberdeen program.
Detailed information about the program is available at: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/lifelonglearning/archaeology_summer_school/
Registration and Credits
Students participating in this program will be registered at the University of Oregon and will receive UO credits for courses taken at Aberdeen. The student’s course work will be reviewed and evaluated by appropriate academic departments at the UO. Students must keep detailed records of course outlines, reading lists, exam results, and other work completed to facilitate accurate evaluation by the academic departments at the UO.
Students are responsible for making sure that the courses they plan to take in Aberdeen will meet major and minor requirements. Students are advised to consult with their academic advisor about their plans to study in the Aberdeen program.
Course Equivalencies
Only those courses that have been taken by UO students in the last seven years are listed on the equivalency sheet. Courses that do not appear on this sheet will need to be approved for UO credit.
