Program Details

Academic Calendar

Students may participate in this program for either semester or the full academic year. Students may also participate in the special summer course, either independently, or in combination with regular enrollment during a semester or academic year.

The fall semester begins in mid-September and ends in late January. The spring semester begins in late January and ends in early June. A "winter term" offering (during the UO fall term) allows visiting UO students to complete course work in selected fall semester courses in December, and to return to the UO for the winter term in January. The 2006 five-week summer program ran from early July to early August.

Dates for 2008-09 are as follows:

Summer Course: June 29 to August 3, 2008.
Fall Semester: September 23, 2008 to January 31, 2009.
Winter Term: September 23 to December 19, 2008
Spring Semester: February 1 to June 12, 2009.

Dates for 2009-10 will be posted at the University of Aberdeen website during the 2008-09 academic year.

Accommodations

Participating students are guaranteed accommodation in a campus Hall of Residence. Students can consult accommodation information on-line at http://www.abdn.ac.uk/accommodation/.

A range of accommodations is reflected in the different charges for housing with meals and for "self-catering" (housing without meals but access to a full kitchen). Arrangements are made by the University of Aberdeen. Housing fees are paid directly to the University of Aberdeen. A deposit is required upon acceptance of any room offer.

The full year is a 32-week contract. Students may also rent rooms (self-catering only) during the vacations at an additional daily or weekly charge.

Insurance

All students on this program are enrolled in a mandatory health and accident insurance plan. A complete description of the benefits and basic provisions of the insurance policy is included with pre-departure orientation materials.

UO Financial Aid

Although most forms of UO financial aid may be applied to program costs, students should be aware that they may need to supplement their standard financial aid package. All students using UO financial aid should download the attached instructions.

Using Your Financial Aid Abroad

Summer
During the summer, loans are generally the only type of aid available to students studying overseas and students should be aware that they may need to supplement their standard financial aid package. Summer financial aid applications are available beginning April 1 and must be submitted to the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships by May 1. Early application is strongly advised.

Aberdeen Scholarship

Each year, Study Abroad Programs is able to select one of the Aberdeem program participants to receive a scholarship that covers the full Aberdeen tuition. To be eligible, applicants must have at least a 3.0 overall GPA.
