Location

Nestled near the foothills of the Aramo Mountains and only 20 miles from the Bay of Biscay, Oviedo is an outdoor paradise. Oviedo is a city similar in size to Eugene with a population of 200,000. It is the commercial, cultural and administrative center of Asturias. It is well connected to other major Spanish cities, such as Madrid and Bilbao, by air, bus and train.

Oviedo itself has a long and colorful history, evidenced by the ancient stone buildings, cobblestone streets, museums, and unique cultural traditions. Oviedo has an impressive old town center with museums and significant architectural sites that date back to when it was the capital of the Asturian Kingdom. It is also a modern city, known for its cleanliness, with an active cultural life featuring concerts, opera, theater and exhibits. The commercial center of Oviedo is full of shops and cafes where it is easy for students to become immersed in the local culture. Due to its size and low crime rate, it is easy to walk just about anywhere in Oviedo.

Nearby coastal communities have centuries of history, including a great deal of Celtic influence, and economies base don fishing and trade. Nearby mountain villages still live off of the land, maintain livestock, and produce fantastic cheese. Seafood is common in Oviedo, as well as many traditional Spanish dishes such as paella and Spanish omelets. Cidra (apple cider) is also very common, and as you will discover, is poured in way you could never imagine!

The Program Site

With more than 40,000 students and 1,600 faculty, the University of Oviedo plays a prominent role in the city’s cultural life. AHA students take language classes at the Curso de Lengua y Cultura Española para Extranjeros (ELE) on the Milán campus of the University of Oviedo campus. The Milán campus, also called the Humanities Campus, serves the Faculties of Philology, History, Art History, Philosophy among other departments.

While AHA students do not enroll in classes with Spanish students, students from around the world may be enrolled in their classes at the ELE. AHA students have the same access to the University of Oviedo campus amenities as their Spanish counterparts, such as the library and sports facilities. Special program courses and functions are held at AHA’s Oviedo center, conveniently located across the street from the Milán campus.
