Deadlines

The application deadlines are:

February 1 for the summer program
March 1 for the fall semester or the academic year.
June 1 for the Spring semester.

Eligibility Requirements

The program is open to students from all fields of study. To be eligible, students must meet the following minimum requirements before departure:

  • have at least 90 credits.
  • have an overall GPA of 3.00 or above (3.50 for graduate students).
  • have at least 20 credits in the general area(s) in which they would like to take courses in Uppsala (for example, social sciences, biological sciences, business, etc.)
  • Swedish language recommendation: Because Uppsala University teaches a large number of subjects in English, there is no language requirement for this program. Nevertheless, students are strongly encouraged to complete one year of Swedish at the UO before joining this program. Students who want to study subjects taught in Swedish normally complete a minimum of two years of Swedish language (with average grades of B or higher) before going to Uppsala, and have strong Swedish language skills.

Students must also make satisfactory academic progress throughout the application process and their study abroad program, and otherwise comply with policies and procedures of the host university, the UO and Study Abroad Programs.

If you do not meet the minimum requirements, please contact Roger Adkins before applying.

Application Process

Early application is advised. Selection for the program is based on a review of the student's written application, transcripts, recommendations and a personal interview, and (for students with advanced Swedish) language proficiency evaluation by the UO instructor of Swedish. Applications are submitted to Study Abroad Programs.

Applications are available in Study Abroad Programs, Room 330 Oregon Hall or online by clicking the link below:

A $50 application fee is due at the time the application is submitted and is non-refundable under any circumstances.

Graduate Students

In addition to the process described above and below, graduate student applicants must also complete the Graduate Enrollment in UO-Sponsored Study Abroad Programs form. This form requires that you obtain preauthorization for your program from your advisor, department head and the Graduate School.

Selection and Participation

Participants must meet the eligibility requirements for their chosen program, and be prepared linguistically, academically, and socially to succeed abroad. Study abroad participants must satisfactorily complete the following:

  • well-written program application.
  • personal interview.
  • timely submission of required paperwork.
  • attendance at pre-departure orientation sessions.
  • payment of program fees.

Program participants must also demonstrate the ability to be successful overseas through evidence of maturity, motivation, and flexibility, and such other characteristics as Study Abroad Programs may deem relevant or appropriate. Participation in any program is subject to the approval of International Affairs and its partner institutions, which may grant or withhold such approval in their sole discretion.

Secondary Paperwork

All students admitted to this program are required to complete and submit to Study Abroad Programs secondary paperwork. The paperwork will be given to students at the end of their interview or can be downloaded at:

Secondary Paperwork

Visa Information

After receiving a letter of acceptance from Uppsala University, academic year students must apply for a Swedish residence permit from the Swedish Consulate. Due to a long processing period, this must be done as soon as the student has received notice of admission. Applicants must attend the Swedish Visa Information Session in order to initiate this process.

Students enrolling only in the Summer School will not require a Swedish residence permit.

Please note that visa regulations and policies change frequently.

All students should apply for or renew (if necessary) their U.S. (or other) passports as soon as possible.

Orientations

All study abroad participants must fulfill the required study abroad orientation process. Students are required to complete a general Blackboard orientation and attend the program-specific orientation.

The orientations will cover administrative logistics, travel, health, safety, conduct, housing and cultural adjustment and whenever possible involve discussions with past participants. More information regarding the orientation process will be emailed to students.
