Why Athens? When I think of Greece, images of the Mediterranean and its islands, remarkable people and food, and archaeological remains of early Greek civilization come to mind. I hope these things interest you as well. While I am at home on islands, this will be my first time in Greece; so, we will be learning together from visits to sites, museums, and discussing archaeological thinking in the context of one of the world’s most impressive early civilizations. I teach about the archaeology of islands, and what better place than Greece! I am most excited about being able to show you and discuss a remarkable series of sites in Greece that tell us about past lifeways from prehistoric times to Classical Greek civilization. In the second class, on ethnoarchaeology, we will be investigating classic village life in the Greek countryside. I am looking forward to showing some of the ways anthropologists and archaeologists learn about the past by studying the present. I look forward to seeing you in Athens! London (England)

Why London? Imagine studying the Tudor period and, instead of looking at a Powerpoint presentation of Henry VIII, his six wives, and his palace, you go to the National Portrait Gallery and see them face-to-face, and then travel to the end of the District Line in Wimbledon, and hop on the 111 bus to arrive at Hampton Court Palace and walk in the same hallways Henry inhabited. In addition, our group will have field trips outside of London that will also add to our experience of how the past and present exist simultaneously in Great Britain. You can’t take more than a few steps without seeing something fascinating that relates to our topics of study. We have so much to see and only ten weeks in which to see it. By the end of our term together, I hope you will be fully immersed in the visual culture of Britain, past and present. Rosario (Argentina)

Why Rosario? If you are interested in experiencing Latin American culture, bringing your Spanish to a new level, and learning more about cinema, this is the place to be! Rosario is a beautiful, livable city located on the wide banks of the Parana River. During your term in Rosario, you will learn about Argentine life firsthand by living with a host family. You will travel to world-famous sites, such as the magnificent Iguázu Falls on the Brazilian border and the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires, often called “the Paris of Latin America.” You will be able to continue your studies with courses that complement and enhance your experiences, including ones on the cinemas of the United States and Latin America. You will make new friends. And, if you want, you can learn to dance the tango! |
