The Application Process

  1. Most programs' applications may be found online through the Applications Page. Application processes for certain programs (especially those sponsored by CIEE and SIT) are more complicated and need to be discussed with a program adviser. Please call (541) 346-3207 to schedule advising.

  2. Applications generally require:
    • Application forms: Some applications are available as fillable pdfs. AHA International allows online application for AHA-sponsored programs, but UO participants must still complete two UO forms, which are available at the UO's AHA Programs Application. For CIEE and SIT programs, please see an adviser (see #1 above).,

    • 2 or 3 short essays (about 1 page each),

    • 1 or 2 recommendations,

    • official transcripts from all universities/colleges where you earned 12 or more credits (including the UO)

    • a nonrefundable application fee (usually $50)—see program materials for details

    • A few applications have additional requirements (e.g., paid deposits, résumé, etc.)

  3. Once the application is complete, you will be contacted to schedule an interview. All applicants are interviewed, which means that there is a chance to “put your best foot forward” and talk about your goals in applying for the program. For advice on how to prepare for your interview, click here.

  4. If the program is a good match and you are eligible, you will be conditionally accepted after the interview and can begin the process of preparing for departure (we will coach you!). You must continue to remain eligible throughout the pre-departure process. For some programs, the host university or institution must also admit applicants. Admission remains conditional and may be reversed if applicants fail to complete preparatory steps or fall out of eligibility.

Note: For most programs, admissions are noncompetitive and all eligible applicants are admitted. Some programs can fill to capacity (usually on a first-come, first-served basis), and then a waiting list begins. In a few cases, the program may offer only a handful of places and admission is competitive. In all cases, early application is encouraged.
