Why Choose a UO-Approved Program?
While it is possible to participate in a study abroad program that
is not sponsored by the UO, there are several advantages to choosing
a UO-sponsored program:
Choose from the best!
With more than 140 of the very best overseas programs offered in more
than 80 countries around the world, the UO sponsors something for
nearly everyone. There are excellent academic, field, internship,
and language-immersion programs in every corner of the globe.
Earn UO “residence” credit.
All UO-sponsored overseas programs earn you “residence”
credits that are listed directly on your UO transcript. This means
that you are not transferring the credits from another school
but actually earning them directly through the UO. Because of this
policy, even seniors are able to study abroad without worrying about
the requirement that 45 of your last 60 credits must be earned at
the UO—they will be!
Use your UO financial aid.
Because you will remain registered at the UO and will be earning residence
credits here toward your degree, you will still qualify to receive
UO financial aid. Nearly all forms of aid can be applied to the costs
of UO-sponsored overseas programs, and your award package will be
altered to reflect your costs in the program in place of
the costs for students who study on campus.
Enjoy access to a team of professionals.
We may not have the flashy, full-color, “scrapbook”-style
pamphlets of some private study abroad companies, but the OIP team
has combined decades of experience with overseas programs and can
help you plan your program every step of the way. We also offer programs
that have been specifically selected to advance your studies at the
UO, and not just fancy vacations that may or may not result in UO
credit in your major, minor, or other areas. Plus, we’re right
here on campus if you run into any unanticipated questions. No one
else can say that!
Make progress toward your UO degree.
In UO-sponsored programs, you are far more likely to earn directly
applicable credits toward your major(s), minor(s), language requirements
or general requirements. In many cases, we can give you a good idea
of how the credits will apply toward your degree before you depart
on the program.
Avoid penalty fees with University Housing.
University Housing will not charge you the fees for ending your housing
contract early when you choose a UO-sponsored program, and they may
be able to arrange for a reservation for your return as well.
Keep your UO status active.
By choosing a UO-sponsored program, you remain continuously enrolled
at the UO and keep your student status active. This will help maintain
your scholarships that require continuous enrollment and retain your
status or membership in special programs like the Honors College,
social organizations, and athletic teams. Remember: students
who leave the university for extended periods of time (i.e., on non-UO
programs) may have to apply for re-enrollment at the UO and could
be required to complete the new general graduation requirements in
effect at that time.
Take courses in your major, taught in English.
People often worry that overseas study programs are only for students
with advanced foreign language skills, or people whose studies focus
on language or international studies. Many UO-sponsored programs offer
courses that cater to students in particular majors, and these programs
generally provide instruction in English. In addition, some programs
are direct exchanges with foreign universities that offer courses
in English in a broad range of fields and subjects. You can register
for courses taught in English in locations that you may not have considered—like
Finland, or Thailand.
We can make it work!
Even if you don’t see what you’re looking for among our
sponsored programs, come in for advising or email a coordinator.
We may be able to make our existing programs work for you. Some students
have designed their own internships, for example, in the IE3
Global Internships program, and many academic programs can accommodate
independent study courses or other special projects. Although this
may take a little extra effort to set up for yourself, it will certainly
be easier than establishing a relationship with a whole new institution,
only to have to try to transfer your work back to the UO later!
