Location

Melbourne is a multicultural city of more than three million people, the second largest city in Australia and capital of the state of Victoria. This truly cosmopolitan city has become the center for the arts, commerce, education, and sports for the State of Victoria. Melbourne boasts beautiful parks, a world-class orchestra, the National Gallery, and a rich diversity of ethnic restaurants. Numerous galleries in the downtown area provide avenues for expression of Australian artistic talent. Unique to Melbourne are Australia’s only operating trams, “the green rattlers.” An efficient system of trains and trams runs throughout the city.

Melbourne enjoys a temperate climate and four distinct seasons. Summer temperatures average just below 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while the winters average around 55 degrees. Don’t forget, the seasons are opposite ours in the northern hemisphere!

La Trobe University is one of Australia’s newer institutions of higher education, established in 1964, with a total enrollment of over 27,000 students across six campuses. Students live and take most of their courses at the main campus in Bundoora, a suburb of Melbourne. This campus is situated in spacious parkland and includes a Wildlife Reserve. It also houses the main research and teaching faculties of the University, including the Research and Development Park, a world-renowned library, multi-media facilities and a hospital including student medical services. The Bundoora campus is located approximately 15 km. from downtown Melbourne and is easily accessible by public transportation.

The University also has six campuses in regional Victoria, extending from Mildura in the west through Bendigo, Shepparton, Beechworth and Albury-Wodonga to Mount Buller in the Victorian Alps. This network of regional campuses provides unique learning opportunities for students, adds diversity and strength to the University, and through programs of regional engagement contributes in significant ways to the development of regional Victoria.
