2008 Study Abroad Photo, Essay, and Digitial Video Contests
Just returned from a study abroad program? Just departing? Or perhaps it’s
been a while since the experience? Here's a chance to rediscover the
memories and share them once again! The Office of International Programs wants
UO students and alumni who participated in UO-sponsored study abroad and/or
international internship programs, to share those moments that made the journey
unique and exciting! Each round has four Contests:
- Photo & Essay Contest ($300)
- General Photo Contest ($75)
- Doors & Portals Photo Contest ($50)
- Digital Video Contest ($100)

Full guidelines below Entrants must adhere to all
Contest guidelines.
1) Photo & Essay Contest
- First Prize will be $300.
- An essay/article of 500-1500 words (about your favorite aspect of your overseas experience, what you learned through the experience,
etc.), plus between two (2) and ive (5) photos with titles and captions. (You are encouraged to submit additional photos, but you must
designate which ive or less are to be considered.)
- The essay portion needs to be proofread and spell-checked. Please keep your topics and language appropriate for a wide audience.
- Essays should be well organized and relect an efort to communicate an idea, relection or encounter related to your overseas experience
that is important to you and of interest to a wide variety of readers.
- All essays should be submitted by email as an attached document saved as a Microsoft Word ile, or an RTF (rich text format) ile. he
email should be sent with the subject line "Contest entry 2008." Entrants must still send the completed and signed entry form and accom-
panying photos as described below.
- Photos submitted should be suitable for a wide audience—no nudity or vulgar gestures.
- Formatting: Photos submitted in digital format should be at least 300 dpi and/or 600x900 pixels, and should be saved on a CD. File-
names must match identiication of photos in the Word document containing the captions. Photos may also be submitted as prints, with
a Post-It label on the back identifying the photo by a title that matches the Word document containing the captions. Both prints and
CD-RWs can be returned to the entrant, upon request.
- Content: Photos should represent the study country and/or sites that were part of the program (excursions, research, etc.). (Photos
from personal travels in other countries are welcome as "additional photos" but may not be considered for prize judging.)
- A completed entry form with the signed statement of release is needed to be eligible for the contest.
- Entrants may only enter Contest #1 or Contest #2, not both in the same year.
2) General Photo Contest
- First Prize will be $75.
- Between two (2) and ive (5) photographs in either digital or printed format with title and caption for each photo. (You are encouraged to submit additional photos, but you must designate which ones are to be considered.)
- Same formatting guidelines for photos as listed above under Contest #1.
- A completed entry form with the signed statement of release is needed to be eligible for the contest.
- Entrants may only enter Contest #1 or Contest #2, not both in the same year.
3) Doors & Portals Photo Contest
- First Prize will be $50.
- Between two (2) and ive (5) photographs in either digital or printed format with title and caption for each photo. (You are encouraged to submit additional photos, but you must designate which ones are to be considered.)
- Content: All photos entered in this Contest must show characteristic (culturally speciic) doors, doorways, portals, or thresholds
that can be seen as representative of "entering into" the particular study abroad site or country. These photos are recruited for a
special project for our website.
- Photos can come from just one or multiple countries. Each caption must include the name of the country where taken.
- Same formatting guidelines for photos as listed above under Contest #1.
- A completed entry form with the signed statement of release is needed to be eligible for the contest.
4) Digital Video Contest
- First prize will be $100.
- One or more clips of digital video made at your overseas study site, totaling no more than 10 minutes total running time (TRT).
(You are encouraged to submit additional footage, but you must designate which 10 minutes TRT or less is to be considered.)
- Clips should be saved on DVD or mini-DVD and should be computer-ready, preferably saved in Macintosh-friendly formats.
- Entries must include a written component that includes FOR EACH CLIP: (1) title of clip, (2) information about where/when the clip was shot and what is in it, and (3) an explanation of why the clip is a good one to show prospective study abroad students.
- A completed entry form with the signed statement of release is needed to be eligible for the contest.
*Note: All entries must pertain to UO-sponsored study/internship abroad programs. Non-UO programs are ineligible.
